Data Nexus, Inc. Introduces Polaris 5.0, the Latest
in Client-Server Transportation Safety Software
August, 2003
Data Nexus' development team is pleased to announce the introduction
of version 5.0 of the Polaris System for Public Safety, our latest
in client-server access capabilities. Polaris software has been
a leader in transportation safety for many years, but this latest
version expands the number of users and platforms that can now share
access to our database applications. Network clients request information
or a service from a server and that server responds to the client
by acting on that request and returning results. This approach to
networking is a cost-effective method to share data between any
number of clients, big or small.
Using TCP/IP protocol, Polaris 5.0 users log into an Applications
Server (APS) that can be from their own machine or another machine
already connected to the APS at a particular port. After the APS
connection is established, the user must log in as a client. Once
a connection is established with the APS, any number of clients
can connect using the same Internet Protocol (IP) address. For example,
an officer in the field can connect from a handheld to the server
using a previously established APS connection. This eliminates the
need for numerous clients to connect individually to the server,
thereby reducing traffic and increasing processing speed. This type
of computer networking also helps to ensure the safety and integrity
of a user's database server by reducing the number of clients directly
accessing the server.
In addition to its client-server capabilities, Polaris 5.0 also
includes numerous other updates and designs to better meet the needs
of its users. For example, the main menu has been enhanced to be
even more user-friendly and capable of taking you where you need
to go within the program in the least amount of time. Security measures
have been added to save data locally whenever a network connection
is lost so users no longer have to fear losing data when they lose
a connection.
Users of this latest version of Polaris are already singing its
praises. Sgt. Johnnie Harris with Dallas PD believes that:
Polaris has made accident reporting and statistical analysis
of crashes easy. It is very easy to train officers to use. Even
our more senior officers who were reluctant to even use any computer
adapted in a short time. The only time I hear them complain is
when a computer is not available for them to use. I regularly
have officers asking to use Polaris. The ability of Polaris to
import accident diagrams from our forensic mapping equipment has
revolutionized our ability to have an electronic library of scale
diagrams available saving manpower. Officers experienced with
Polaris using a laptop in the field are able to have most accident
reports completed, including the diagram before wreckers arrive
to clear the scene.
Lt. John Denholm with the Harris County Sheriff's Office describes
the impact Polaris has had in his agency:
Polaris works very well for us considering the large geographical
area involved. No longer do supervisors have to track down a report
or wait for a fax. We sign on in the morning and reports are queued
up waiting for approval. The deputies have found it very user-friendly
and really like the drawing program.
