Nexus, Inc. Uses Pocket PC Technology to Bring Mobile Solutions to the Public
Safety Field
September, 2001
Data Nexus, Inc. announced today the latest addition to its mobile computing
family. Marlin R. Crouse, Vice President & Chief Technical Officer
reported that, "the iPAQ Pocket PC H3670 can now be used for citation
and other traffic violations, queries to the National Crime Information
Center database (NCIC), and contact or intelligence gathering." Officers
in the field now have the ability to access all the information they normally
would from their desktop computer but through the handheld PC. The Pocket
PC gives officers not just reporting and database search capabilities
but also offers Internet access, standard Windows applications like MS
Word, and email. In addition to being connected while being mobile, the
Pocket PC simplifies the task of data entry for officers. The iPAQ is
equipped to handle several different methods of data entry including:
handwriting recognition, soft keyboard, voice record, and inking.
Data Nexus, Inc. began developing the Polaris Mobile software with the
field officer in mind. So much of an officer's job occurs outside the
office and that is why, according to Public Safety Specialist, Greg Lewis,
"We constantly create, develop, and test our software to make that
job a little bit easier. We don't just research to find out what an officer
needs, we research so we can come up with sensible solutions to meet those
needs." It only makes sense that an officer needs to be mobile while
also needing to stay connected. As Crouse emphasizes, "That it why
we at Data Nexus have developed Polaris software specifically for a Pocket
PC. Polaris keeps officers connected while the Pocket PC allows them to
remain mobile as well."
The citation feature of Polaris for the Pocket PC allows officers to
add, edit, delete, view, and print citations. Officers are also given
the option to select a time period for how many citations are listed on
the screen for selection. These times periods range from that very day
to one month or even all citations.
The FBI authorizes the NCIC database search feature available on the
Pocket PC. The NCIC system provides a computerized database for ready
access by authorized users to documented criminal justice information
such as property checks, firearm checks, driver license checks, and motor
vehicle checks. Data contained in NCIC is provided by the FBI, federal,
state, local, and foreign criminal justice agencies, and authorized courts.
Officers are able to enter contact information and gather intelligence
data. Contacts can be added, edited, deleted, and viewed. Contact information
includes numerous variables such as full name, gender, ethnicity, ID number,
date of birth, address, phone, eye color, weight, hair color, marks/scars,
build, complexion, etc.
Be looking for Data Nexus to demonstrate this latest mobile solution
at various conferences and trade shows. We are very excited to offer this
technology and anxious to share it with the public safety field.
